Side Event - Nature, Peace, Security: Forging New Pathways for Global Stability
On the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly this year, adelphi global, WWF International, and the Permanent Missions of Slovenia and Germany to the UN are convening a high-level breakfast discussion on the nature-security nexus. The event, called Nature, Peace, Security: Forging New Pathways for Global Stability, will be held on 25 September from 8am to 10am at the Security Council Report in New York City, New York.
The event will explore how environmental degradation, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, contributes to instability, and how conserving ecosystems can foster resilience and peace. Drawing on new analysis by WWF and adelphi, the discussion will bring together senior representatives from UN agencies, Permanent Missions, and international organizations to advance the global agenda on environment, peace, and security.

About UNGA 80

Each September, world leaders convene at UN Headquarters in New York City for the UN General Assembly (UNGA). For decades, UNGA has remained an essential forum to address the world’s most pressing challenges. Today, these issues include climate change, poverty and inequality, peace and security, and global health.

The 80th Session of the UN General Assembly will open on Tuesday, September 9, 2025 at UN Headquarters in New York City. On September 9, 2025, UN Secretary-General António Guterres will open the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. This year, H.E. Ms. Annalena Baerbock, of Germany, was elected as the President of the General Assembly.

Beginning September 23, Heads of State and government leaders will deliver speeches during the General Debate as part of High-level Week. In addition to the General Debate, which features addresses by world leaders, the General Assembly will hold its fourth high-level meeting on noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health, a high-level meeting on the 30th Anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, and a high-level meeting on the 30th anniversary of the World Programme of Action for Youth. Many organizations typically host events on the margins of UNGA, virtually and across New York City.
