Assistance in the field of forestry and biodiversity conservation
The major problems identified in the forestry sector in the Cooperative Republic of Guyana and Republic of Suriname include:
- the reduction of the forest area, especially due to mining activities and the difficulties of monitoring wood exploitation activities and
- pressures on the biodiversity and forest habitats due to the way the forest resource is exploited.
Following an analysis, the need to improve the regulatory and control framework regarding the system of forest concessions, the main system for the exploitation of wood forest resources in the Cooperative Republic of Guyana and Republic of Suriname, was identified. The development of a national forestry policy, the Biodiversity Conservation Strategy and guidelines for environmental impact assessment are being considered in the future. A non-exclusive list of specific training needs is being satisfied through training and knowledge transfer activities.
The projects in the field of forestry and biodiversity conservation for the Republic of Guyana and the Republic of Suriname total 140,000 euros. The projects represent transfer of expertise and endowment with goods necessary for the beneficiaries of the two states - the Ministry for Natural Resources of the Republic of Guyana (70,000 euros), respectively the Ministry for Land Policies and Forest Management of the Republic of Suriname (70,000 euros). The two assistance projects were initiated in 2021, continued in 2022 and will most likely be completed in 2023 in partnership with Transilvania University of Brasov. The total amount of assistance foreseen for the two states during the period 2021 - 2023 is almost 264,000 euros.
