North West climate-peace hubs: A climate security approach to conflict prevention

The northwestern parts of Nigeria are highly affected by the impacts of climate change and are experiencing severe droughts and floods, which in addition to being one of the root causes to conflict, also amplifies existing drivers of insecurity, like continuous herder-farmer tensions, rising crime and banditry, inter-ethnic distrust and unsustainable natural resource extraction.

This project fosters resilience against climate and security risks in North West Nigeria in a conflict-sensitive manner through improving access to data in order to support decision-making for anticipatory actions related to climate and conflict risks, increasing access to conflict sensitive and climate resilient livelihoods and green jobs, and lastly, strengthening systems and practices for communal management of natural resources.

It will contribute to lasting peace through addressing the root causes of insecurity through nature-based solutions and climate-smart livelihoods. This project utilises climate and security information and data to support evidence-based policy, and at the same time, ensures that green jobs and climate resilient livelihoods for young people and women and men are created.

The project works through already established political-security mechanisms at the state level, and will expand the scope of these to also include agencies responsible for natural resource management and disaster risk reduction and management. Additionally, local dispute resolution mechanisms will be strengthened and revitalised integrating natural resource management best practices.
