Climate Mobility Summit 2024
Organized over two days in the margins of the UN High-Level Week, the CMS will serve as a global platform for affected communities and policymakers to gain awareness and knowledge of relevant climate information and data, as well as legal, policy and financial tools needed to anticipate, prepare and plan for climate mobility as part of community transitions in affected countries.
Context & Objectives:
Forced displacement is emerging as the human face of the climate crisis. There is growing global consensus that the escalating impacts of climate change threaten sustainable development and imperil the health and livelihoods of people globally. The greater frequency and severity of extreme weather events, water scarcity, decreased crop yields, and rising sea level directly impact food security, shelter, education, social cohesion and economies. In turn, the climate crisis is accelerating forced displacement and migration, with projections indicating that by 2050, over 200 million people around the world may be forced to leave their homes due to climate-related factors. Millions more may become stranded in increasingly vulnerable conditions as climate impacts undermine their economic means and agency to move and to decide on their adaptation journeys.
In response to this urgent global challenge, the second annual Climate Mobility Summit (CMS) will bring together global leaders, policymakers, experts and representatives of affected communities to discuss evidence, policies, and actions needed to enable positive adaptation journeys for people and communities at the frontline of the climate crisis.
The Summit is a unique venue for connecting all stakeholders concerned with climate mobility and promoting cooperation around concrete solutions that can enable efforts at the global, national, and local levels. To that end, the Summit works towards strengthening the global policy ecosystem around the emerging climate mobility agenda, enabling partnerships and engagements between champions, change agents and experts.
Programme Overview:
The High-Level Breakfast on Climate Mobility will kick off the Summit, bringing together global leaders as well as key partners and stakeholders for an open dialogue to discuss community transition and good practices that can enable affected countries and frontline communities to anticipate, plan, and design responses for climate mobility.
The rest of the Summit program will address the latest challenges at the nexus of climate action and human mobility, highlighting the work of the GCCM and its partners to overcome them at the global, regional, national and local levels. This includes building knowledge, informing policy, enabling communities of practice, accelerating global
partnerships, and localizing climate finance. The day will conclude with a high level reception.
The second day will begin with the High-Level Leaders Breakfast on Sea-level Rise, convening champions and leaders from affected regions to discuss tangible responses and ways to elevate the efforts to address the existential threats posed by sea-level rise. Building on the Sea-Level Rise Summit to be held in the UN General Assembly the previous day, the Leaders Breakfast will provide a crucial opportunity to take stock of the outcomes of the UN Sea-level Rise Summit and discuss concrete actions and next steps to reinvigorate international cooperation and advance locally anchored solutions in support of affected countries and communities. The rest of the programme will feature panels & discussions featuring leading practitioners and experts to delve into specific challenges and opportunities in harnessing climate mobility amidst the climate crisis. The second day will also conclude with a high level reception.
Sharing the UN High-Level Week with the UN Sea-Level Rise Summit and the Summit of the Future, the Climate Mobility Summit will be focused on elevating shared priorities, advance common approaches and inspire concrete engagements & partnerships to harness climate mobility ahead of COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan and the 2025 UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, France.
