The Climate for Peace Initiative - towards multilateral inclusive action

The impacts of the climate and environment crises can be drivers of conflict and a risk to international peace and stability, with disproportionate impacts on individuals in developing, lower-income, fragile and conflict affected states. Further, evidence is clear that peace and stability are often decisive in mitigating against and adapting to the consequences of climate change and environmental degradation as well as reducing and dealing with the losses and damages caused by climate change. Likewise, climate and environmental action is a critical aspect of sustainable peace.
Responsibilities to address these pressing challenges are dispersed across governments, the UN system, multilateral institutions, think tanks, academic organizations and NGOs. No one actor alone will be able to meet the scale of the challenge.
During this UNFCCC side-event, panellists explored early action and investments to address the climate – environment – peace nexus. Discussions revolved around the Climate for Peace and other relevant initiatives, approaches to increase harmonization and collaboration across sectors and silos, and scale-up action and investments.
