HLPF Side Event - Driving Transformative Change: Foreign Affairs and the 2030 Agenda
The essence of the SDGs – greater welfare, security and sustainability for all – aligns with core foreign policy objectives. But questions still remain: What is the role of foreign policy in the global sustainability architecture? And what are the fields of engagement and areas of cooperation under a new “Sustainable Foreign Policy”? The side event will address these questions with the goal of better understanding how to leverage the SDGs to achieve core foreign policy objectives. The discussion will examine how foreign policy can support SDG implementation with a focus on the SDGs under review at the 2019 High-Level Political Forum. It will also explore the SDGs’ links to peace and security and highlight broader implications for geopolitics. The discussion will draw on a recent study on the connections between the SDGs and foreign and security policy (“Driving Transformative Change: Foreign Affairs and the 2030 Agenda”).
