How does resource wealth affect democracy, the quality of government institutions, and the incidence of violent conflict?

Michael L. Ross from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has reviewed the resource curse literature. Ross identifies several harmful effects of oil wealth: it makes authoritarian regimes more durable, increases certain types of corruption, and is associated with the onset of violent conflict in low and middle income countries under certain conditions.
