The U.S. Asia-Pacific Rebalance, National Security and Climate Change: A Climate and Security Correlations Series

U.S. Asia Pacific Rebalance National Security and Climate Change

This report sustains that the current and future U.S. engagement with the Asia-Pacific region needs to consider the effects of climate change in order to build a resilient security environment. The report is published by the Center for Climate and Security, in partnership with the Carnegie Mellon University Civil and Environmental Engineering Program, the Center for New American Security and the University of Oxford.

Its main chapters focus on current strategies, policies and practices, case studies and future pathways. The topics discussed are among others the potential impacts of climate change on strategic decision making - such as military basing - and the effects and possible responses to increased migration in the region. The report's recommendations include to develop region-wide climate-security plans and deliver targeted support for states which are most affected by climate risks.
