UN must play bigger role in climate action—Shahriar Alam, State Minister Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh

“Unfortunately after the Paris conference, even though a hundred billion dollars were promised, we received very little support from the top emitters of this world. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government allocated so far 400 million U.S. dollars for climate change as a Climate Change Trust Fund. We need the UN to play a larger role.

They can play a critical role from the U.N. Security Council even though some might argue that this is not within the objective and scope of Security Council. But obviously climate change is a real threat that for external forces or external elements people are being torn out from their own place. So this fits into the definition of human rights as well. So we do have a legal framework to fight it out.”
